Want To Know About Indiana Coronavirus Hospitalizations? This Website Will Tell You
Jerome Adams, the U.S. Surgeon general, has played a major role in informing the public about the nation's coronavirus response efforts. But he has also made some missteps along the way. Here's what we know. Indianapolis Star
People interested in how coronavirus is affecting Indiana now have another source to track the impact of the disease.
The Regenstrief Institute, an Indianapolis research organization, this week debuted an online dashboard that includes information on hospitalization rates, comorbidity rates, and other data not found on the state's coronavirus website.
“We’re just trying to see how we can use these data to paint a more clear picture and more complete picture,” said Dr. Peter EmbÃ, Regenstrief president and chief executive officer. “We had been doing that in a private dashboard. We recognized there was value to creating a public version of that.”
Regenstrief started working in January on codes for electronic medical records to identify coronavirus testing before the United States saw its first case. When the disease hit Indiana, researchers started collecting data from the Indiana Network for Patient Care, which draws information from the state's hospitals. Now all but two to three hospitals in the state share the data with the network.
The Regenstrief data for now focuses on how many people have been hospitalized.
According to the dashboard, from the beginning of March through Monday, 2,204 people have been hospitalized for the illness in Indiana.
Of those, 1,546 have been discharged. Of the 511 who were hospitalized in an intensive care unit, 337 have been discharged.
Hypertension appears to be among the greatest risk factors for developing and being hospitalized for the coronavirus. More than 940 people with underlying hypertension have fallen ill, about 11% of all positive patients and 20% of those who have been hospitalized. People with preexisting diabetes account for about 7% of all cases and 13% of all hospitalizations.
The dashboard also contains information about length of stay by age once hospitalized. The overall average length of hospital stay is 10.3 days. People age 70 to 79 spend 13.1 days in the intensive care unit and 10.9 days if they do not go to the ICU.
In the future, the dashboard will include information on emergency room department visits for coronavirus as well as mortality rates for those who are hospitalized, Embà said.
About 34% of people who test positive have visited an emergency room and, 12% to 14% of those who are hospitalized died, he said.
So far, it appears that about 24% to 25% of those who fall ill are hospitalized, and about a quarter of those go to the intensive care unit.
